Portland State Vikings Add Surrey Forward
PORTLAND – Head Coach Lynn Kennedy has announced the signing of Ruchae Walton and Savannah Dhaliwal to National Letters of Intent for the 2017-18 academic year.
"We are fortunate to have Ruchae and Savannah as part of our Viking family," Kennedy said. "They are both excellent students and bring valuable experience to our team. With our returners, our early signings of Labrea (Denson) and Kylie (Jimenez), and now adding Ruchae and Savannah, we couldn't be more excited for our upcoming season."
Walton, a 5-foot-10 shooting guard from Milton Keynes, England, was named the Women's Elite Academy Basketball League Player of the Year in 2017 and the U17 National Schools Finals MVP. She was a part of a four-person team that represented Charnwood College at the International Schools Sport Federation World 3×3 Championships in Tallinn, Estonia in 2016. She and her team finished third.
"Ruchae is an experienced guard that can play the 2, 3, or 4 positions," Kennedy added. "She fits into our system with the ability to knock down threes, attack the basket, all while using her length and athleticism. She brings some needed experience with her international play at the highest level."
Dhaliwal, a 6-foot forward out of Surrey, British Columbia, is a three-star recruit according to ESPN.com. She led her Panorama Ridge team to Grade 8 and 10 provincial basketball titles and led her team to the 2017 B.C. Senior Girls Triple A basketball championship semifinals with a 46 point, 18-of-27 shooting, performance in the quarterfinals.
"Savannah is a competitor. She fights every possession and will give us experience at our stretch 4 position," Kennedy said. "She can take players outside and also post up when she has the advantage. She competed against some of the best players during her club summer session and dominated her high school season."
Along with Walton and Dhaliwal, Portland State added a pair of guards during the early signing period in November. Seattle's Labrea Denson along with Thornton, Colo.'s Kylie Jimenez will join the Vikings in the fall.
Portland State is coming off its best record in years after finishing 16-17 overall and making it to the Big Sky Women's Basketball Championship semifinals. The Vikings return nine letterwinners from last year's squad.
