Surrey wins the bid to host the Western Regional Championships.
Surrey, British Columbia (August 14, 2018) - Sport Surrey is pleased to announce that the city of Surrey has won the bid to host Quidditch Canada’s Western Regional Championship for 2019 and 2020. Acquired with support from Sport Surrey, the 2019 event will be held over the weekend of November ninth and tenth at Hjorth Park. Teams from throughout Western Canada will come to compete, bringing with them a positive impact on the community.
Surrey has hosted the Western Regional Championships before, in 2016. The last time Surrey hosted this Harry Potter based sporting event, it was the runner up for the inaugural Sport in the City Award. This award is presented to a successful sporting event that has increased the profile of the city, enhanced the community, as well as being economically beneficial to the city.
“This is a unique opportunity for us to host a growing sport with a dedicated community of players,” Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner told Quidditch Canada. “It is also a chance to showcase the game to those not familiar with it and hopefully inspire a few to take up this fun and inclusive sport.”
The community benefits of this event showcase the importance of dedicating resources to sporting events. Sport Surrey provided support throughout the bidding process to accurately portray the City of Surrey to Quidditch Canada as the best choice and capable of meeting the high standards of quality and capacity for their event, ensuring that the event is set up to be a success.
